Austrian Refugees in Britain: The Fight Against Fascism in World War II

  • 17 Nov 2015 — 11 Dec 2015

This historical-biographical exhibition focuses on the members of the exile youth organisation Young Austria showing photographs and documents about their lives and activities.

Young Austria was founded by young Austrian refugees from National Socialism in March 1938. Throughout the Second World War Young Austria offered its members support and practical help, organised social and cultural activities and worked for the reestablishment of an independent democratic Austrian state after the end of the war. Numerous members served in the British Army and Auxiliary Territorial Services or with the general war effort. After the war some stayed on and became British Nationals others returned and participated in the post-war reconstruction of Austria.
