Arthur Schnitzler (1862–1931)
A son of a Jewish immigrant, Schnitzler practised medicine before becoming one of Vienna’s most prominent playwrights and novelists. His stories deal with sex, love and death and drastically bring the subconsious of the characters to light. Freud famously referred to Schnitzler as his “Doppelgänger”. For the play Der Reigen he was reproached for producing pornography. In 1938, the Nazi’s condemned his work as “Jewish filth”.
