George Prochnik's book The Impossible Exile is a profoundly moving account of Stefan Zweig's years of exile from his beloved Austria. Told with reference to his own family, who also left Austria just before the outbreak of war, Prochnik gives his readers a sympathetic yet honest portrait of this complicated man including the strangely contented years in London and Bath, the desperate years in New York and Ossining leading up to the final months in Rio and Petropolis.
The author will be interviewed by television director and writer Henrietta Foster. The actor Ilan Goodman will read from Prochnik's magnificent book and also from Zweig's own work.
