I Exist Only as a Reflection

  • Thu 4 May 2017
  • 7:00PM

I Exist Only as a Reflection is a play portraying two exceptional Austrian authors: Ingeborg Bachmann and Elfriede Jelinek, (the latter awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2004), performed by the internationally acclaimed actress Maxi Blaha. Composer and pianist Simon Raab provides the musical score in this special ACF performance.

This stage monologue portrays the parallels in the works of both Jelinek and Bachmann. Staged as a musical and theatrical double portrait, it illustrates the exciting intersections of these unique female writers who excelled in this male-dominated field and were outsiders in their careers.

Austrian Nobel Prize winner Elfriede Jelinek wrote about Ingeborg Bachmann and provided the texts exclusively for Maxi Blaha. Together with the autobiographical novel by Ingeborg Bachmann, (Malina), they were interwoven into a sensitive theatrical monologue. The original play Es Gibt Mich Nur Im Spiegelbild (in German language) was translated into English by the well reputed Jelinek interpreter Penny Black.

Both events will be held in English.

On 8 May Maxi Blaha will present a work and participate in a Q&A about Berta von Suttner at the Ingeborg Bachmann Centre. MORE INFO
