Luisa Kasalicky: delay tactics of second rate quality

  • 25 Nov 2008 — 21 Jan 2009

Luisa Kasalicky calls herself a painter, yet her works rarely conform to a two dimensional painting frame. Inspired by the complex and modular wall-sized collages of Frank Stella, Kasalicky began her painting practice by developing complex colour systems, then extending her compositions into three-dimensional collages. Now using ready-made building materials from the world of DIY, such as the ubiquitous MDF, the staple white bathroom tiles and cheap wall to wall carpets, Kasalicky uses the inherent colours of each
material as the basis for her extensive three-dimensional compositions. Despite the hard materials used, often synonymous with the gritty world of construction, Kasalicky’s installations become intricate, delicate compositions, forming abstract images from a multitude of angles.

Her compositions also carry strong narrative background; for example "Bad Gastein" is reconstructed from a simple memory of sitting in a car, watching the world speed by. By breaking the memory down into its static and moving visual elements, Kasalicky re-formed these with her found materials, translating the original moving scene into an extended arrangement. Luisa Kasalicky explains the elements within her constructed systems of different materials as actors on stage: all connected to each other to form a setting.

Luisa Kasalicky, born 1974 in Praha, Czech Republic, lives and works in Vienna. She studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts and her international exhibitions include a.o.: Erzählungen -35/65+; Kunsthaus Graz; Dan Devening projects and editions, Chicago; If You Like Platin, Love Scenes on a Screen, Kunstraum Fenster C, Vienna. "delay tactics of second rate quality" is Kasalicky’s first UK solo show.
