In the first of his new series of study days focussing on each of Mahler's symphonies, Gavin Plumley will explore how Mahler began his great symphonic odyssey. Composed in the late 1880s, Mahler's first symphony embraces Central European musical traditions and yet manages to stride out on its own, offering a highly original reappraisal of the genre.
