Freud’s exploration of the unconscious world of troubled patients not only revealed the inner life of particular patients but became symptomatic of how individuals were perceived by others and themselves. The period in Vienna before WWI can be seen as an age devoted to exploring this inner world, an age of insight. This day will explore the connections with some of Mahler’s music and the movement towards self-exploration.
