Three artists discuss their thoughts on the human within the production of textiles. Moderated by Basic structures of curator Hannah Conroy, this discussion will reflect on craftsmanship, repair and the relationship to movement and form. This discussion will expand on the themes in the exhibition, reflecting on the connections between the body, technology and the inherent gestures that relate to construction of textiles.

Fay Nicolson (UK) is one of the artists featured in the exhibition. She will be joined by Austrian textile artist Sascha Reichstein and British artist Jo Longhurst.

In the latest phase of her Other Spaces project, Jo Longhurst (UK) draws on time spent with the rhythmic gymnasts of the Vila Olímpica da Mangueira - a social project in a Rio favela.Through image, installation and performance, flesh and fabric intermingle, as Longhurst interrogates Brazil’s vibrant body culture, in the context of Brazil’s current turbulent social and political climate, exploring a new approach to the representation of movement and the body. Longhurst graduated from the RCA in 2008. She lives and works in London and Birmingham.

Fay Nicolson (b.1984 in the UK) plays with the limits of painting, image and object and how these definitions relate to the body. Her works shift fluidly between print, paint and sculpture with a focus on ideas of learning, documenting, performing and weaving. Fay graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2011 and Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in 2006.

The work of Sascha Reichstein (AT) deals with questions of cultural displacement and the relation between tradition and modernization. Reichstein's photographs, videos and installations focus on regional western contexts and examine their global expansions, connections and transitions. She lives and works in Vienna.
