The German Screen Studies Network (GSSN), established at King’s College London in autumn 2012, is delighted to announce an inaugural symposium exploring the realist turn in recent German-language film. Evident in tendencies including the minimalist filmmaking of the so-called ‘Berlin School’, and the ‘neo-neo-realism’ (Todd Herzog) of recent Austrian film, the ‘return of the real’ is explored in a postgraduate workshop (July 3) and inaugural symposium (July 4-5).
Both events are supported by the Goethe-Institut London, and represent the culmination of a three-month filmseason at the Goethe-Institute, May - July 2013
Speakers include:
John E. Davidson (Ohio State University), Paul Cooke (University of Leeds), Andrew Webber (University of Cambridge), Helen Hughes (Unversity of Surrey), Erica Carter (King's College, London) and Martin Brady (King's College, London)
Special Guest:
Elke Hauck presenting her award-winning film Karger (2007), Goethe-Institut, 4 July, 7pm
The organizers wish to acknowledge the support of the Goethe-Institut, London; the Department of German, King’s College, London; and the Universities of Cambridge, Kent, Leeds and Surrey.
