In the early 1900s, Baronness Hertha Freiin von Winkler lived and worked in Vienna and the Austrian countryside. A Red Cross nurse during the War, studio photographer and caterer to friends and family, ‘Tante Hertha’ was beloved by family and friends for her sparkling personality and fantastic food. Nearly 100 years later her hand-written notebook containing all her recipes was gifted to her cousin’s grand-daughter, Monica.

Monica Meehan, together with her Austrian mother Maria von Baich, have taken this wonderful resource and created a beautiful book. With over 100 original recipes, all of which have been tested and brought up to date for the modern cook, it is not only an impressive collection of recipes but a fascinating look at the life of a turn-of-the-century Viennese family.
