Travels in No-man’s-land

  • 5 Nov 2009 — 30 Dec 2009

Twenty years after the fall of the Iron Curtain Austrian photographer Kurt Kaindl travelled along the former east/west border, from Lübeck in Germany to Triest in Italy, documenting and photographing the remnants of the Iron Curtain in the lives of Europeans today. Portraits, or what Kaindl calls extended portraits, capture individuals against the backdrop of their environment in an attempt to document the relationship between landscape, nation and the individual. The exhibition also features landscapes and cityscapes, what Kandl refers to as the relics of the Iron Curtain. The exhibition was previously displayed at the Museum für Volkskunde Wien (The Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art).
