UnSpooling – Artists & Cinema is a large and ambitious group exhibition that straddles two giant bodies of reference – art and cinema – presenting contemporary artists’ current reflections and interpretations of cinematic forms and characteristics, through text, image, sound, gesture and even spoken word. Two Austrian artists are included in the exhibition. Roman Kirschner sculpts fragile, short-lived crystal structures in Roots (2005-06), as a reminder of primal image and sound making. Gebhard Sengmüller presents Slide Movie (2006), where 24 clattering carousels expose the indeterminate status of moving still images.
