In conjunction with the retrospective exhibition of the exiled Austrian artist Hugo ‘Puck’ Dachinger, Lucy Watling from the Courtauld Institute of Art will discuss Dachinger’s work in the context of the New Burlington Galleries exhibition of ‘Twentieth Century German Art’, held in 1938.
This exhibition presented so-called Degenerate art and artists to the British public. For many it was their first encounter with modernist styles such as Neue Sachlichkeit and Expressionism. Dachinger, who arrived in the UK that same year was himself a politically minded modernist and this event will explore the reception of his work in this context.
