The Seventh Continent is a site-specific performance produced and performed by the Performance Arts strand of the BA Theatre Practice (Central School of Speech and Drama) and directed by Julian Maynard Smith. Based on a screenplay by Michael Haneke, this project is considered to be one of the most ambitious that students have attempted. Julian Maynard Smith is well known for staging innovative performances and this production makes use of new media and technologies to explore Haneke’s filmic language, as well as his take on a true story from 1980s Austria, where a respected middle class family of three was found dead in the ruins of their home. There, police found a letter in which the father explained that their deaths were the result of a suicide pact due to the family’s inability to find meaning to their existence.
