Spider Project presents a unique telling of the fairytale Hänsel and Gretel at this year’s Liverpool Biennial. The psychology of fairytales has been much interpreted since Sigmund Freud and the structure of a tale may tell us a lot about the structure of a society. Therefore this tale represents much more than child’s dependence on its parents, it can also be seen as the story of economic and social dependence. The Spider Project is an award winning relapse prevention and aftercare service offering a range of creative, cultural and physical activities for people with former substance-abuse problems.

The play is written by Gernot Wieland who works with film, video installation, performance and objects in order to examine psychological conditions in society and in human beings. He uses the construction of autonomous parallel worlds as an artistic strategy to develop different forms of (fictitious) miniatures and mini-dramas.
