To celebrate the publication
of Art and the Mind – Ernst H. Gombrich. Mit dem Steckenpferd unterwegs, edited by
Professor Dr Sybille Moser-Ernst, the ACF presents a special tribute evening to
the legendary Art Historian Ernst H. Gombrich. With contributions from figures
as varied as Julian Bell, Hans Belting, Alfred Brendel, Yiqiang Cao and Sybille
Moser-Ernst herself, the book powerfully demonstrates that Gombrich’s ideas are
more relevant than ever, as a new generation expands his efforts to understand
art using the latest knowledge of the human mind and brain.
The evening will feature introductions by Leonie Gombrich (granddaughter) and Director of the Warburg-Institute Prof Bill Sherman, followed by a talk entitled So what, Sir Ernst? Remembering Gombrich’s words and reassessing their creative force today by John Onians, Professor Emeritus of World Art at the University of East Anglia, Norwich.
Ernst H. Gombrich, the Art Historian, master of both Continental thought and English language, became one of the World’s most well-known representatives of the discipline. Half a century ago his testable theories transformed thinking on how to look at art. After only a few years during which semiotics appeared to render Sir Ernst’s common-sense framework outdated, the rise of cognitive approaches has enabled him to recover internationally the status he once had in France as a radical thinker within modern philosophy. The book Art and the Mind – Ernst H. Gombrich. Mit dem Steckenpferd unterwegs explores Gombrich’s intellectual legacy by analysing some of the concepts and insights in the context of Image Science, the “Steckenpferd”. The international contributors are original authorities in their own right, among them some of Gombrich’s former students.

Prof Dr Sybille Moser-Ernst teaches Art History at the University of Innsbruck. She was a PostDoc student of Ernst H. Gombrich at the Warburg-Institute, University of London.
