The ACF London's CineClub is pleased to presented a special programme of celebrated Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke's early work. Initially produced and shot for Austria’s TV ORF, the four titles were directed by Haneke between 1976 and 1993. Restored by Les Films du Losange with the support of the Austrian Film Institute, Haneke led the restorations himself.
We continue the programme with Lemmings Tale 1: Arcadia, the first part of a two-part 1979 Austrian television film. Haneke’s celebrated interrogation of his generation’s collective trauma is an impressive exercise in disillusionment, captured through his cool yet sympathetic eye.
In Arcadia, we encounter a group of teenagers staring down adulthood with a rebellious gaze and an underlying streak of violence, all cloaked in the oppressive weight of their parents’ expectations. It is a powerful warning of the dangers inherent in mindless obedience and foreshadows the later brilliance of The White Ribbon.
Please note this film contains themes of abortion, incest, self-harm and suicide. Not suitable for viewers under 18 years of age.
Austria, 1979,113min, German with English subtitles.
