The ACF London's CineClub is pleased to presented a special programme of celebrated Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke's early work. Initially produced and shot for Austria’s TV ORF, the four titles were directed by Haneke between 1976 and 1993. Restored by Les Films du Losange with the support of the Austrian Film Institute, Haneke led the restorations himself.
We continue the programme with Rebellion (1993). Haneke’s adaptation of Joseph Roth’s novel challenges the moral authority of the state. An injured veteran, armed only with a barrel organ and a medal acknowledging his military service, struggles to find his place in a post-war landscape. Steeped in warm, beautifully restored sepia tones and displaying an emotional pathos rarely seen in a Haneke film, the steady disillusionment of a man broken by state violence is captured with equal amounts of compassion and fury. Branko Samarovski’s performance anchors the tragedy with heart-wrenching depth.
