We are delighted to welcome the renowned four-handed piano duo Marialena Fernandes and Ranko Marković at the ACF London for their captivating programme "Viennese Waltz Export". This concert shines a light on the fascinating journey of the Viennese waltz - tracing its development through time and across borders.
The evening focuses on the joy and vibrant energy of four-handed piano playing, while bringing to life the far-reaching influence of the Viennese waltz across time and geography. Taking inspiration from Johann Strauss II, the programme showcases how his legacy resonated with some of the most significant composers in Vienna, St. Petersburg, Paris, England and the USA.
Join us for an evening celebrating the charm and evolution of the waltz. Enjoy a rich and varied selection of waltzes for piano four hands by composers such as Johannes Brahms, Wolfgang Rihm, Benjamin Britten, Arnold Schönberg and many more.
Johann Strauss (Junior) was born in Vienna in 1825, the son of the bandmaster and composer of the same name. He not only led the Viennese waltz to its heyday but also ensured its global popularity by touring extensively around the world.
At the same time, piano manufacturing in Vienna was undergoing a tremendous boom. Ignaz Bösendorfer settled in the city in 1828 and helped define the renowned “Viennese piano sound” with his grand pianos — a sound still appreciated across the globe today. By 1914, there were no fewer than 100 companies in Vienna involved in the manufacture and maintenance of pianos.
What a stroke of luck: the Strauss family was at the forefront of a new musical genre that defied simple categorisation — blurring the lines between “classical” and “popular”, art and entertainment. The waltz brought people together; life became lighter, more animated. Meanwhile, the piano, particularly for four hands, emerged as a beloved medium for shared music-making — a cultural practice cherished by both connoisseurs and enthusiasts alike.
