EUCA Annex presents new and recent work by Frederike Schweizer and Kate Squires in the second of a series of two-person shows.
In a kind of un-counting, the exhibition stages a dialogue between Frederike’s textural embroidered paintings and Kate’s site-sensitive sculptures in which systems of ordering become destabilised by material encounters. In both practices there is a precarious insistence on the visible labour of the hand, and a commitment to process in which proto-technologies come to function as conceptual strategy.
Duo Show 2 extends and expands the associative choreography of the two-person exhibition form, Frederike and Kate’s work intervenes in the architecture of EUCA Annex and playfully upends the often passive nature of relations between artwork and viewer.
Frederike Schweizer lives and works in Vienna. Her textile-based works explore the space between gesture and system. Systems count on stability; gestures keep the score of interruption. Her textiles hold both at once, letting control and collapse share the same surface. Frederike begins embroidery as a system; she counts, she measures, she keeps time. She stitches by hand–imprecise in its ductus–and slows the line at that threshold where system turns into touch. Exhibitions include ClubClub (Vienna), Dokumentationszentrum für moderne Kunst (St. Pölten, Austria), Helmhaus (Zürich), Belvedere 21 (Vienna) and Size Matters - Space for Art & Film (Vienna).
Kate Squires is based in London and works in the domain of sculpture, with performance, digital media and collaborative settings helping to unravel and develop processes. Ambiguous objects communicate the idea of use and consumerism, whilst material approaches draw on changing processes of mass production and digital media via what are often laborious, hand-made or DIY means. Spatial encounters allow the identity of these ‘part-objects’ to be in the world: surface and form come unhinged and meanings are destabilised. Here, within visual and language-based systems, slippages are laid bare. Exhibitions include Projektraum Bethanien (Berlin) CICA Museum (South Korea), Herbert Read Gallery (Canterbury), Tintype and 6second Gallery (London).
About the Duo Show series
This curatorial programme invites a creative dialogue between pairs of artists, an evolving process of overlapping exhibitions will see EUCA Annex’s Britannia Row space transformed.
The programme's ambitious sequential structure reimagines the conditions of display and how practice is performed in exhibitionary contexts, with others (co-exhibitors), and through material encounters; objects, structure and technology. The series will include a wide range of artists with different practices and approaches to the production and display of art, each pairing will both encounter and leave traces of their presence as the chain of exhibitions extends throughout 2026

Euca Annex is a site for contemporary art production and cross-disciplinary research, it provides a platform to foster dialogues between emerging and established artists, to offer more agile and commutable forms of address, through public discourse and site sensitive dissemination. EUCA Annex recently moved from a purpose built space to a new home in Britannia Row, Islington. EA is in partnership with The Florence Trust.
