In 1971 Jelinek adapted the screenplay of this film from Ingeborg Bachmann’s novel MALINA. It centers upon a female writer and her unusual story of her relationships with two different men, one joyous and one introverted. Jelinek's adaptation stays truthful to the complexity of the source material and Huppert's performance under Schroeter's direction is remarkable.
