Celebrating the publication of YES & NO Kino+Film Austria Opus One and Opus Two, made with the support of the Austrian Film Institute, YES & NO presents Queercore.
This programme focuses on the close 1980s Super 8 collaboration between Ursula Pürrer and Ashley Hans Scheirl. The collection presented is unique in (queer) film/art history, and seems like a stroke of liberation. The films are an expression of DIY cinema. Bursting with passion, they subjectively attempt to perceive voids and produce (sensual) fantasy worlds. They playfully combine performance art, painting, drawing, stage design, and (Punk) music with sexual fetishes and expressive cinematic borrowings from sci-fi movies. Unusual costumes, suggestive make-up, hand-made props, animated scenes, and self-modulated (city) models characterise their visuals. In addition, queer/lesbian sign-language perverts or subverts everyday symbols and objects.
Alongside humorously staged S&M practices, piss games are also part of the vocabulary that comes into play in the erotically charged spaces and establishes, through artistic means, community relationships. The films represent an expression of consistently positive sexual energies. Energies that don’t give a damn about bourgeois morality and instead celebrate sexual pluralism.
