The University of Hertfordshire Galleries presents Charade II, by the Vienna-based artist Clemens Stecher. The exhibition will comprise images, collages, large-scale projects and paintings. The centrepiece of the show is a collection of hand-made comics in five cycles. Working in exquisite detail with watercolour, India ink and acrylic on paper Charade II is a series of individual scenes taken from news coverage, but removed from its context and its ordering in time. Stecher uses this technique as a response to our media overload. By refusing to assemble the individual pictures into a comic strip he leaves each image with the fragmentary character that typifies media images in general. Clemens Stecher was born in Vienna where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts.
