The big winner at this year's Austrian Film Awards was the first-time filmmaker and actor Karl Markovics. His debut as a director with the art house film “Atmen“ (“Breathing”) received awards in six categories including best feature film, best director, best script, best actor (Thomas Schubert). Other winners include “Whores’ Glory” by Michael Glawogger – which won best documentary and best cam-erawork (Wolfgang Thaler), and Wolfgang Murnberger’s “Mein bester Feind“ (in the categories best make-up artist and best costume designer). Markus Schleinzer’s debut film “Michael“ earned an award for the best sound.
The Max Ophüls Prize goes to the Austrian film director Markus Schleinzer for his drama “Michael“. The 96-minute film offers a disturbing peek into an unfathomable crime from the perspective of the perpetrator. The jury praised the conceptual courage of the filmmaker. Friedrich Cerha has been awarded the international Ernst von Siemens Music Prize 2012. The Austrian composer, born in 1926, will be awarded the prize, valued at €200,000, for his life's work. In addition Soundings composer Luke Bedford was awarded the Composers' Prize.
The city of Graz awards the "Writer of the City of Graz" scholarship each year and includes the provision of an apartment for free in Cerrini-Schloessl on the Schlossberg, from 1 September 2012 until 31 August 2013. A monthly stipend of EURO 1,100 is paid.

Ironbridge Gorge Museums Trust said the work, entitled Core, would be displayed at the Enginuity museum from March until autumn 2012. The installation will feature computer-generated video projection, set to a soundtrack and a series of screens will double as "windows into a weightless world, populated by groups of humanoid figures". Mr Hentschlager said the figures would "interact like a school of fish... and at other times like intricately choreographed modern ballet dancers". Emily Howard has been chosen as one of the 20 commissions to feature centre stage at the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. All commissions will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and will tour the UK.
