Dr Jill Lewis (Swansea University) examines the historical and social context of the Destination UK exhibition. Between 1948 and 1952 approximately 4,000 Austrian women travelled to the UK to work. They included factory workers, clerks, hairdressers and students. Most were recruited to work in the mills of northern England. This lecture will recount the stories of some of these women, their impressions of the UK, and the British reactions to them.
