In The White Ribbon, a series of strange retributive acts are perpetrated against the residents of a North German village prior to the outbreak of WWI. Peter Bradshaw writes in The Guardian that: ‘The White Ribbon has an absolute confidence and mastery of its own cinematic language’. The White Ribbon has won the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes film festival.

Following Stefan Ruzowitzky’s Oscar success with The Counterfeiters in 2008 and Götz Spielmann’s 2009 nomination for Revanche, Austria has another two directors in competition for a nomination at this year’s Academy Awards. The ACF’s Cineclub presents Michael Haneke’s The White Ribbon (Germany) and Arash T. Riahi’s For a Moment Freedom (Austria).
