Touched

  • 18 Sep 2010 — 28 Nov 2010

Touched celebrates a decade of bringing new art to the UK through curatorial collaboration for the International show. The exhibition will consist of art that succeeds in affecting the viewer: close enough to us to move us in mind, body and soul. The Austrian artists invited to participate are Franz West, who will be showing at Tate Liverpool, Otto Mühl and Markus Schinwald. Franz West’s work is difficult to categorize as sculpture or installation. His focus on the body has led beyond collages to sculptural paper-mâché, polyester and aluminium cast works. Otto Mühl is a controversial figure of the 1970s Viennese Actionism movement. Recently he has developed ‘electric painting films’, a new technique in which he paints digital photos from actions using a computer and edits the process into films. Markus Schinwald lives and works in Vienna and Los Angeles. He uses various media to explore space and the human body. Prostheses and mechanical apparatuses often put the protagonists of his films and photographs under marionette-like constraints, which transform the human body into a cultural artifact.
