To commemorate the 10th anniversary of Austrian filmmaker Michael Glawogger’s untimely death in April 2014, we have chosen three films from his large body of work. The selected titles reflect his versatiity spanning from drama to comedy and documentary filmmaking.
Glawogger was known for globe-trotting documentaries that show people grappling with horrendous circumstances. Glawogger died of malaria on location in Liberia. He was 54.
We conclude our mini season with Workingman's Death for which Glawogger received the awards from the London Film Festival. Workingman's Death follows the trail of the HEROES in the illegal mines of the Ukraine, sniffs out GHOSTS among the sulfur workers in Indonesia, finds itself face to face with LIONS at a slaughterhouse in Nigeria, mingles with BROTHERS as they cut a huge oil tanker into pieces in Pakistan, and joins Chinese steel workers in hoping for a glorious FUTURE. It asks the viewer whether heavy manual labour has disappeared, or is it just becoming invisible.
